Nimh
Oh, i stepped on a rat the other day. I was in the garden, when i heard a squeaking, which i thought was the back door swinging shut. I went closer to have a look, and the folowing three things happened at once: 1) i felt something under my left foot; 2) i heard another, bigger, squeak; 3) something bigger than a mouse but smaller than a cat legged it off behind me towards the holes under the fence.
It reminded me of The Rats of Nimh, and old Jonathan Frisby.

Happened with me once. I still don't know thought what it was i stepped on.
Came into the kitchen in the morning once, the garden window was open, and i felt like i'd stepped on some burnin metal thingy and there was this big fat insect (about the size of a 50p coin) in diameter, slowly flew off out of the window leaving me jumping and screaming. had to keep it in water for a good 15 minutes for the burning sensation to go away
